Conference Championship Playoff Picture

And Then There Were Four

There are four teams left in the race to win Super Bowl 50, with the Patriots and Broncos representing the AFC, and the Cardinals and Panthers representing the NFC. Take a look at the Playoff Picture as we get set for the Conference Championship games a week from now:

AFC: Patriots at Broncos
Patriots - #2 seed in the AFC, had a first round bye, and defeated the Chiefs (#5 seed) 27-20. Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to Rob Gronkowski, and the team is much healthier than they were during the regular season.
Broncos - #1 seed in the AFC, had a first round bye, and defeated the Steelers (#6 seed) 23-16. Peyton Manning played for the first time in almost eight weeks and was quite efficient with the ball. Their #1 ranked defense forced a fumble that stopped a long drive by the Steelers and the turnover led to the game-winning drive for the offense.

NFC: Cardinals at Panthers
Cardinals - #2 seed in the NFC, had a first round bye, and defeated the Packers (#5 seed) 26-20 in overtime. The offense struggled as a whole for a large part of the game, as they were unable to get their running game going and Palmer threw two picks, but Larry Fitzgerald had a game for the ages. After two completed Hail Mary passes by Aaron Rodgers, the game went into overtime, and the Cardinals scored on their first drive after a long pass play to Fitzgerald (arguably one of the best Divisional Round Matchups of all time).
Panthers - #1 seed in the NFC, had a first round bye, and defeated the Seahawks (#6 seed) 31-24. This team has executed extremely well throughout the season and knocked off a powerhouse in the NFC for the past three or four years - a team that went to the Super Bowl for two straight years. The Panthers made a statement, as the game was already out of reach by the half when they were leading 31-0. The only problem was that they allowed the Seahawks to make a furious comeback in the second half and led their guard down, which should not have happened.

Why the Patriots Won Super Bowl 51

Pats Win Over Falcons 34-28 in OT It was a tale of two halves. In the first half, the Patriots could not get anything going on the offensive side of the ball. In the second half, the Falcons could not get anything going. Belichick and Brady pulled off some more magic and won their fifth Super Bowl together. In the second half, it seemed as though the game was getting away from the Atlanta Falcons, and their youth caught up to them. I believe that this game should have definitely been won by the Falcons, but the game slipped away from them. There are many reasons to explain what happened, including the fact that the Falcons did not run the football to milk down the clock in the second half, they turned the ball over when it was not necessary, they did not play as tough and physical on defense and seemed gassed, and even just because Tom Brady and the rest of his offense played a hell of a game. In my opinion, though, the real reason why the Patriots won, is because of t...

Week 14 Power Rankings

Cowboys on a Roll, Panthers Drop Not many people expected the Dallas Cowboys to top the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football during Week 13. The Saints came into the game winning ten straight, while the Cowboys were a "mediocre" team in the midst of a three-game winning streak. The Cowboys won 13-10 and will rise in the week's rankings. In other important games, the Chicago Bears lost a shocker to the New York Giants, Lamar Jackson won his third straight game for the Baltimore Ravens against the Atlanta Falcons, the Houston Texans won their ninth straight game, and the Los Angeles Chargers won a close one against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Carolina Panthers are quickly fading in the wild-card race, and have lost four straight games. Here are my rankings heading into Week 14: Los Angeles Rams (11-1) Kansas City Chiefs (10-2) New Orleans Saints (10-2) Los Angeles Chargers (9-3) New England Patriots (9-3) Houston Texans (9-3) Pittsburgh Steelers (...

Week 7 Power Rankings

Chiefs Suffer First Loss; Ravens Shut Out Titans The New England Patriots were able to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs by three points at home, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers came back to avoid an upset to the 49ers, the Steelers defeated the Bengals, and the Dolphins took down the Bears at the end of overtime. There were some unexpected wins and losses, as well as some close games, in Week 6. The Dallas Cowboys blew out the Jacksonville Jaguars and their top-notch defense, 40-7. It is been hard to figure out which teams are "contenders" and which are "pretenders" this season. It is especially difficult to rank the middle of the pack teams. Here are my power rankings heading into Week 7: Los Angeles Rams (6-0) New Orleans Saints (4-1) Kansas City Chiefs (5-1) New England Patriots (4-2) Los Angeles Chargers (4-2) Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2-1) Minnesota Vikings (3-2-1) Baltimore Ravens (4-2) Cincinnati Bengals (4-2) Carolina Panthers (3-2) Green Bay P...
