How to Build a Team

Ground Zero

Many teams at the top of the draft order including the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and Chicago Bears, are all searching for answers to explain why their teams have not been good for the past couple of years. They have to rebuild from the ground up, and gain a foundation and identity for the team that they can potentially build around. I am going to be kind, and give these teams an explanation of how to build through the draft and free agency to improve their teams. The formula is actually pretty simple, as seen by the success of the Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons this season.
  1. In the first and second rounds of the NFL Draft, draft stud offensive or defensive linemen - forget about drafting a quarterback for now.
  2. During the free agency period, retain a capable quarterback (for now) and find other strong pieces to add to the offensive and defensive lines.
  3. Next year, during the draft, find some more linemen to solidify the fronts. Then, draft a defensive back or a wide receiver.
  4. In free agency, try to sign defensive backs and a versatile running back who could help a young quarterback out through screen passes and similar things.
  5. Throw away the season, once again (sorry fans).
  6. Finally, the following year, draft a quarterback. Find someone who would fit your particular system, and someone who is not only skilled, but has great leadership qualities. If you want to draft a quarterback in later rounds, draft a wide receiver or linebacker instead.
  7. In free agency, find a linebacker who would be sufficient for your system and you would not have to pay that much money to - but someone who will get the job done.
  8. Make sure that you retain players who are important for the system implemented, and pay them their money, without overloading the cap space.
  9. Finally, develop the rookie quarterback and everyone else on the team.
  10. Win.
This process definitely sounds easier than it actually is, but it is not impossible. To get the job done, these teams must have good general managers and coaches who can think outside the box. Hopefully, they understand that the foundation of the team is not the quarterback right away, but instead the offensive and defensive lines.

This is how you build a team in the National Football League from the ground up.

Why the Patriots Won Super Bowl 51

Pats Win Over Falcons 34-28 in OT It was a tale of two halves. In the first half, the Patriots could not get anything going on the offensive side of the ball. In the second half, the Falcons could not get anything going. Belichick and Brady pulled off some more magic and won their fifth Super Bowl together. In the second half, it seemed as though the game was getting away from the Atlanta Falcons, and their youth caught up to them. I believe that this game should have definitely been won by the Falcons, but the game slipped away from them. There are many reasons to explain what happened, including the fact that the Falcons did not run the football to milk down the clock in the second half, they turned the ball over when it was not necessary, they did not play as tough and physical on defense and seemed gassed, and even just because Tom Brady and the rest of his offense played a hell of a game. In my opinion, though, the real reason why the Patriots won, is because of t...

Week 14 Power Rankings

Cowboys on a Roll, Panthers Drop Not many people expected the Dallas Cowboys to top the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football during Week 13. The Saints came into the game winning ten straight, while the Cowboys were a "mediocre" team in the midst of a three-game winning streak. The Cowboys won 13-10 and will rise in the week's rankings. In other important games, the Chicago Bears lost a shocker to the New York Giants, Lamar Jackson won his third straight game for the Baltimore Ravens against the Atlanta Falcons, the Houston Texans won their ninth straight game, and the Los Angeles Chargers won a close one against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Carolina Panthers are quickly fading in the wild-card race, and have lost four straight games. Here are my rankings heading into Week 14: Los Angeles Rams (11-1) Kansas City Chiefs (10-2) New Orleans Saints (10-2) Los Angeles Chargers (9-3) New England Patriots (9-3) Houston Texans (9-3) Pittsburgh Steelers (...

Week 7 Power Rankings

Chiefs Suffer First Loss; Ravens Shut Out Titans The New England Patriots were able to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs by three points at home, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers came back to avoid an upset to the 49ers, the Steelers defeated the Bengals, and the Dolphins took down the Bears at the end of overtime. There were some unexpected wins and losses, as well as some close games, in Week 6. The Dallas Cowboys blew out the Jacksonville Jaguars and their top-notch defense, 40-7. It is been hard to figure out which teams are "contenders" and which are "pretenders" this season. It is especially difficult to rank the middle of the pack teams. Here are my power rankings heading into Week 7: Los Angeles Rams (6-0) New Orleans Saints (4-1) Kansas City Chiefs (5-1) New England Patriots (4-2) Los Angeles Chargers (4-2) Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2-1) Minnesota Vikings (3-2-1) Baltimore Ravens (4-2) Cincinnati Bengals (4-2) Carolina Panthers (3-2) Green Bay P...
